A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Caregivers, and Friends of Columba Catholic College.
Our College has been busy, with a wonderful hum of activity. Our appreciation to Bridie Johnson, Nathan Juhas, Louise Duffin, Rod Lane, Saahid Khan, and all the St Mary’s staff, supporters, helpers, and students for a very well organised Primary Interhouse Swimming Carnival last Thursday, held at the beautiful Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool. Our Secondary student helpers received high praise for their conduct and help on the day. Our Primary students demonstrated our College values of Courage, Commitment, and Compassion, trying their best and demonstrating enthusiastic Inter-House College spirit! Well done!
The Emerging Leaders’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Roadshow was a huge success. Our thanks to Lorette Tassan, Kitrina Otto, Gina Porter, Maddi Carter, Bec Ebelt, Michael Ku, and Andrew Butler for supporting. Our grateful thanks to Lara Burns, Suni-Faye Davis, Brooke Stevenson, and Rod Lane for supporting last week's Prep ‘Come and Try’ Transition morning. Our little visitors had a wonderful time, exploring our beautiful indoor and outdoor learning environments.
Recently, we had a College team make it into the OptiMINDS State Finals in Brisbane, which was a wonderful achievement! Our students tried their best with the STEAM challenges and had an enjoyable time, being excellent ambassadors for our College. Our thanks to Kara Hunt for leading our OptiMINDS team, and thank you to Jemma Webber and Lesley Archer for taking the students. Thanks to Sonia Wood for driving to and from the airport.
Our talented College Senior Food Technology students hosted our annual ‘Pink It Up’ event, where our students, under the expert guidance of their talented mentor Tonya Burgoine, showcased their culinary skills, raising money for breast cancer research and further awareness. Our sincere thanks to Gail O’Sullivan who shared her inspirational journey and message of hope with the audience. A very special thank you to our local sponsors who donated so many wonderful prizes for our raffles. We deeply appreciate our staff, supporters, attendees, and everyone involved in this special event.
My sincere thanks to the College Senior Leadership Team and all staff for supporting, whilst I was at the three day Townsville Catholic Education Office (TCEO) Principals’ Conference last week. Sessions included the School Law Conference, the new TCEO Stages of Development for Continuous School Improvement, Catholic Identity, and Financial Management. It was wonderful to connect and collaborate with TCEO Senior Leaders and other Catholic Principals from across the diocese.
October is Mission Month. This is a time that we pray, fundraise for, and learn about the good works of the Catholic Mission, and we thank Father Emmanuel for speaking to us about Mission Month at our St Mary’s liturgy last week. This year, our efforts are directed towards supporting people in need in Mongolia. On Monday 21st, Mt. Carmel campus will begin their Mission Month/’Socktober’ activities with their annual House Money Lines Competition, led by House Leaders in Years 11 and 12. On Tuesday 22nd October, there will be Mission Month liturgy, a crazy sock day, bake sale and soccer match on Wednesday 23rd October. St Mary’s Campus will celebrate ‘Socktober’ on Wednesday 30th October. We look forward to fun soccer matches with Father Emmanuel on both campuses. Thanks to all for supporting as part of our Mission Month awareness.
We are very proud of our College students for ‘shining their light’ and living out our College Mission, sharing their gifts and talents via academics, sport, volunteering, service to others, Catholic identity, working towards and achieving their personal goals, developing their passions and interests, and following our Big 5 College Expectations; Respect for Self; Respect for Others; Respect for Learning; Respect for the Environment; Respect for our Traditions. Recently, Duncan Hewlett was recognized for assisting an older member of the Community to her car and helping to unload her shopping, and Matthew (Maff) Richter was recognized for his kindness and compassion shown to Gail Mabo; one of Australia's leading First Nations artists, activists, and educators. Last week the Certificate II in Active Volunteering completed their final volunteering session for that course, mowing, cleaning and gardening at St. Columba's Parish. Well done! Please let us know if you have a story/ proud achievement to share. #Columbapride.
We wish our Preps a lovely excursion day on Monday to the Billabong Sanctuary and our Year 5’s an enjoyable camp at Gumburu this week. Special thanks to Jemma Webber and Lesley Archer for supporting, along with other camp supervisors. Thank you to Bec Ebelt and Helen Milton for leading in the Columba Catholic College Work Experience Celebration Dinner, hosted at the College on Tuesday evening.
On Thursday St Mary’s campus celebrates Grandparents’ Day with a special liturgy/assembly, recognising the love, wisdom, and guidance of grandparents. They play an invaluable role in the lives of our students and our school community. Grandparents are the heart of our families, and their support enriches the educational journey of our children. This Friday, St Mary’s students will wear red in support of Day For Daniel (gold coin donation). This day reminds us of the important role we each play in keeping our students safe and educating them about the importance of personal safety. Please find here a link to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation which provides students and families with a range of information suitable to support our young people.
Please see some recent staffing updates and join me in welcoming our new staff members to our College:
Due to personal matters, Jeannie Beales needed to depart the College and our prayers are with Jeanie Beales and her family at this time. We are pleased to announce that Michael Barter-Hicks has arrived at the College and will resume the role of Middle Leader Arts/ Visual Arts Secondary teacher. Michael Barter-Hicks is an experienced Head of Department (Arts) and has worked in prestigious schools such as Brisbane State High and Faith Lutheran College. He has a background in not only teaching and leading in Visual Arts, but in teaching dance, Religion, English, and Mathematics. Michael Barter-Hicks has a Bachelor’s degree from Queensland University of Technology (Creative Industries) and a Graduate Diploma of Education from Queensland University of Technology.
Clay Elder joins us on our College Facilities and Maintenance team. Clay Elder has 38 years’ experience in the field and is a certified boilermaker and fitter. Clay Elder has worked in timber mills, construction crews, workshops, mining, and for THEISS Contractors. He has extensive experience in maintenance and landscaping.
College Facilities Update. Unfortunately the council pump that provides water to our College ovals/fields is under repair. We are watering our ovals (in the short term) via water trucks and pumping water from the dam, every other day. We are optimistic that the repair to the pump will be completed in the near future.
This Friday 25th October is World Teachers’ Day with the theme ‘Hats Off to Teachers’. On this World Teachers' Day, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to our incredible Columba Catholic College teachers and staff. Your dedication, passion, and commitment to nurturing our students' minds and hearts do not go unnoticed. You inspire, challenge, and empower our young learners every day, shaping the future of our community. Thank you for your hard work and for making a difference in the lives of our students. Together, we are building a brighter tomorrow, as we grow together in faith, purpose, and knowledge.
We are looking forward to hosting our Awards Night at the World Theatre on Tuesday November 12 at 6:30pm. Please see our Columba Catholic College Awards Night invitation and we look forward to celebrating the success of our students and acknowledging their gifts and talents as a community
Many blessings,

Happy Teachers’ Day
Prayer for Teachers
Giver of all Wisdom and Greatest of all Teachers,
look upon our teachers with love.
Grant them the resolve to nurture out eager minds
and never give up on us who fall behind.
Bless their hearts for they rejoice when we succeed
and encourage us when we fail.
Endow them with gentle patience
for the path of learning is never easy.
Kindle a spirit of passion in them.
It is the flame that ignites the love of learning in us.
Help them to see the potential in each student.
Their belief in us means much more than the grade we make.
Instil them a commitment to keep learning.
It shows us not to fear new knowledge and experiences.
Inspire them to touch the future.
They influence how big a dream we dream for ourselves.
Bless our teachers who have come before
for their work endures to this day.
Let the light of Your example shine upon all teachers.
To build up their words.
To love with their mind.
To share with their heart.
AMEN.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - TEACHING & LEARNING
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - SM CAMPUS
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff, and Students,
Term Four is well underway and even though the term is one week longer this year, there is still the familiar feeling of how to fit everything in before the end of the academic year. Our Year Five students are in the cooler climate of Paluma this week at the Gumbaru Environmental Education Centre on their class camp. Amongst the formal goals of developing community and self, with a focus on leadership, they will be having a ton of fun and creating lifelong memories. Thank you to Mrs Webber, Mrs Archer and Mr Bell (Catholic Education Supply Teacher) for making the camp possible for our Year Five students. Our 2025 Student leadership team will be drawn from this cohort as they prepare to be our Senior Primary class next year.
The process of selection for our 2025 Senior leaders will commence next week and will include a presentation from our current student leaders to the Year Five cohort to give them some firsthand insight into the highs and lows of the role, as well as the College expectations of responsibility, accountability, and commitment to the role with many College events requiring their attendance and assistance. The student candidates for the role of student leaders next year will also need to be nominated by their parents / caregivers, as some events may involve parent transport on a weekend or public holiday eg. Anzac Day. The Year 5 candidates will need to present a prepared speech to their peers, as well as students in Years 4 and 6 along with some staff members. I am looking forward to our Student Leader selection process and congratulating our successful leaders for next year.
We will have our annual Grandparents' assembly this week and it will be an opportune time for us all to remember the importance that grandparents can play in the lives of grandchildren, and reflect on our shared experiences and fun we have had with our own grandparents over time. After our assembly, grandparents (or stand-in family members for grandparents) will have the option of spending a little time in classrooms and then a short morning tea together at around 10:00am.
Congratulations to Benjamin House for their success at our Interhouse Swimming carnival last week and thank you again to our amazing HPE Teacher and Swimming Coach, Ms Johnson! It was great day of competition and
participation. We now have our interschool swimming squad training for the Interschool competition on the 8 November and we wish them the best of luck.
This end of the semester and the year becomes very busy for teachers and students as they engage in the process of assessment and reporting. It is important that students are not missing any school days unnecessarily so as to not miss any key assessment pieces or opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the curriculum.
Some key events coming up this term to watch out for will be our final Secondary Transition Day on 18 November, our Primary Awards Ceremony on Friday 29 November, our Year Six Rite of passage Dinner on Tuesday 3 December, Carols on the Green on 5 December and our Thanksgiving Liturgy on the last day of school – Friday 6 December.
In conclusion, I wanted to mention two important ‘housekeeping’ matters. The College’s duty of care each day
officially commences at 8:15am when we have staff on duty in the playground and surrounding areas. Any students who arrive before 8:15am should wait in the Covered Area until the duty staff arrive and the bell to play rings at 8:15am. Unfortunately, some students have been arriving way too early at school, sometimes as early as 7:20am when there is no supervision or care provided. Please ensure that your child is not dropped off at school too early, for their own safety. The final matter is regarding Tuckshop orders. Next year, the only way to order from the tuckshop will be via the Flexi Schools app and orders will no longer be able to be made via the front office. If you have not yet downloaded the app and used it, please avail yourself of it this term so that you are able to order via the app next year.
Thank you for your support of Saint Mary’s Campus, as parents, family and friends throughout the year and I look forward to seeing you at school in the various events throughout this term.
Rodney Lane
Deputy Principal- St Mary's Campus
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL-ADMINISTRATION
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff, and Students,
In the early part of the year, the Year 10 students completed their Careers Short Course, and at the end of Term 2, completed their Work Experience. We were exceptionally grateful to partner with 46 providers across the state, including businesses in Cloncurry, Boulia, Rockhampton, Georgetown, Townsville, Croydon, Palm Island and Aramac. Of the 46 providers, 34 were local to Charters Towers.
Our young people thrived during their Work Experience. Since completing their placements, I have seen our Year 10 students increase their confidence and comfort in who they are as a person, have more clarity around their career choices and increase their certainty with their subject and certificate offerings for Year 11 and 12.
On Tuesday 22 October, the College hosted a Celebration Dinner for the providers of Year 10 Work Experience to thank them for partnering with us in 2024. Without our providers, Work Experience simply could not happen. For our Celebration Dinner, we welcomed our incredibly valued local providers with members of the College VET program, Louise Duffin and Helen Milton; College leadership Jacqueline McNalty, Ben Naughton and Dan Kyle; and Trent Engel from Townsville Catholic Education.
During the evening, we were fortunate to hear from some of our wonderful Year 10 students about
their placement experience, responding to the questions “What did you enjoy? What did you learn?
How did this help you?”. Whether our students have will focus on a career aligned with their Work
Experience or not, the sentiments expressed to all in attendance their immense gratitude for the
opportunity to complete their placements. Students shared their enjoyment at the comradery in the
workplace, their pride at the new skills they have developed, and how Work Experience had helped
them realise their future direction.
It was delightful to hear from our Work Experience providers following the perspectives of students.
With so many industries facing staff shortages, it is more critical than ever to allow our young people
to experience different jobs prior to choosing their future careers. The students and staff of the
College were privileged to hear Tony from CT Fitness, Zanna from Charters Towers Pharmacy, Ebony
from Charters Towers Regional Council and Dr Jason from Gold City Dental share their insights about
how hosting Work Experience has benefitted their businesses. In addition, I would also like to thank
Herbert Hall Hardware, Columba Catholic College Kitchen, Columba Catholic College (St Mary’s
Campus), Bright Horizons Childcare and Rural Mechanical Repairs for attending our Celebration
Dinner.
I am immensely proud of the success of the Year 10 Work Experience program in 2024. I would like
to thank Mrs Helen Milton for co-organising our Celebration Dinner and for her continuing
collaboration in the VET department, Trent Engel for his valuable advice and wisdom and the College
leadership and staff for their ongoing support of the Work Experience program.
As I conclude this article, I would like to acknowledge and thank all our providers who have
partnered with the College in 2024, including those who have hosted our students outside of
the Work Experience program. I look forward to continuing our partnerships moving into 2025 and
beyond.

PREP NEWS
Our youngest learners have progressed so far with using their phonemic knowledge and beginning writing behaviours to write short texts. To support their learning of collecting information and writing informative texts, the curious learners set off to Billabong Sanctuary.
After an exciting bus trip to Townsville, the Prep students met their knowledgeable ranger, Alex. We were very fortunate to have Alex take us on a special tour to meet the crocodiles, snakes, koalas, kangaroos and meerkats. Whilst meeting these animals, Alex shared her wealth of knowledge to ensure the students learnt lots of facts about each animal's appearance, diet and habitat. During our tour, the students met, and the brave ones even pat, a baby crocodile, a baby corn snake, Maze the Koala, and Dobby, Ron, Niffler and Moody, the Meerkats. A clear highlight of the day was spending some quality time up close petting and feeding the kangaroos.
Whilst the students had a fantastic time out of the classroom, the learning wasn’t over. Upon returning to school, they selected their favourite animal to complete an informative report on. Students will also use their creative skills to construct a diorama of their animal’s habitat.
As the countdown for Year 1 begins, I am incredibly proud of the progress each student has made throughout the year. We have six very busy weeks ahead before they embark on their next learning journey.

YEAR 1B NEWS
Welcome
We already feel that this term is going to fly by very quickly and are looking forward to events such as Grandparents' Day and our final assembly item for the year, which will be in Week 5. We are looking forward to another fantastic term. We thoroughly enjoyed the swimming carnival last week and are very proud of how well everyone swam. A reminder that Library is still on Wednesdays and homework is due on Fridays.
In English, the children have been exploring procedural texts. We have been reading the story “Wombat Stew” and actually got to make our own variation of the stew. Apparently, it was quite delicious.
In Religion this term, we have been learning about God’s creation and are about to learn about Mary, mother of Jesus, and how we can honour her.
We are working hard to secure a date for the Year 1 Art Show. More details will hopefully follow in the coming days.

YEAR 5 CAMP
DAY 1- After settling in to their accommodation in Gumburu, the Year 5 students went on a rainforest walk to Witts Lookout. Afterwards, they enjoyed the playground at the town common area. Tonight, they are going for a night walk and will cap it off with a camp fire and toasted marshmallows. What a great first day in Gumburu!
DAY 2-Today, the happy campers hit the high ropes course. Some scaled the heights with ease and some were a little more cautious, but they all enjoyed the giant swing at the end - including Mrs Webber and Mrs Archer! They spent the afternoon searching for creatures and critters in the creek, and then played some team games. The Year 5 campers have had another fabulous day in the rainforest!
PRIMARY INTERHOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
What an incredible day at our Primary Interhouse Swimming Carnival! The spirit, teamwork, and talent on display were truly inspiring. Congratulations to all the swimmers for their hard work and enthusiasm!

CELEBRATING STUDENT SUCCESS
Matthew (Maff) Richter
Dear Matthew,
My name is Tammi Webber and I am the creator of the Emerging Leaders program for Townsville Catholic Education Office. I am writing to you (& your teachers) today, to inform you of some feedback that we received from one of our presenters at the Mental Health & Wellbeing Roadshow that you attended last Friday.
As part of our team and the presenters final 'debrief' after the 3 day event, we were all asked to say what our main highlight of the event was for each of us. Gail Mabo - one of Australia's leading First Nations artists, activists, and educators, told of an experience that she had with one of our students in one of her workshops.
Gail's sessions were highly emotional as she spoke of her own story of domestic violence, and life changing experiences. During this powerful and moving story telling, Gail at one point became overwhelmed and had to pause during the workshop to compose herself.... It was then that she told us of a young man who - without making eye contact, asked her if she needed a hug - to which she replied yes. You then stood up in front of your large group of Emerging Leaders from across our diocese to offer our guest presenter a hug, and to provide comfort to her during this moment.
Matthew (Maff), THANK YOU for being such a kind, compassionate and empathetic young man. During your 'hug' with Gail, she said she could sense her mother's spirit, and that she could feel her mother's arms around her in your embrace. But the story doesn't end there - at the end of the session you presented her with your pipe cleaner 'artwork' which was our Aboriginal Flag - which actually represents Gail's mum's heritage! This special moment was very moving and spiritual for Gail, and she commented that if you are an example of the type of young people who are coming through our Emerging Leaders program - then our culture is in good hands
Maff, this story brought us all to tears on that Friday afternoon, and I wanted to share with you and your teachers at Columba how very proud we all are of the strong, and caring young man that you are. You might not have known what was happening in that moment, but your act of kindness will live on as a memory with Gail forever. Congratulations young man, and thank you for being you!
Congratulations to the Certificate II in Active Volunteering students for completing their final volunteering session for that course mowing, cleaning and gardening at St. Columba's Parish. They were then rewarded with an ice cream at McDonalds. Thanks, Mrs McNalty!
Townsville Catholic Education survey
8th October 2024
Dear Parents/Carers
The Townsville Catholic Education Office has in place guidelines for use by schools on reporting student academic achievement from Prep to Year 10. The guidelines are being reviewed during this term in readiness for 2025 and I would like to invite you to complete a survey to provide feedback on your experience and value in the current reporting processes.
All schools in the Diocese are bound to comply with the Australian Government Education Regulation (2023) which requires schools to provide the following:
A report must be readily understandable to a person responsible for a student at the school.
A report must be given to each person responsible for the student at least twice a year.
For a student who is in any of years 1 to 10, the report must:
- give an accurate and objective assessment of the student’s progress and achievement, including an assessment of the student’s achievement:
(i) against any available national standards; and
(ii) relative to the performance of the student’s peer group; and
(iii) reported as A, B, C, D or E (or on an equivalent 5 point scale) for each subject studied, clearly defined against specific learning standards.
In order to comply with this regulation, schools provide parents/carers with a written report at the end of each semester that includes a grade for each subject, some comments, investment in learning (effort) and days absent. For Prep to Year 10, the national standards refer to the Australian Curriculum achievement standards.
The survey seeks your feedback on the current reporting process and its effectiveness in communicating your child’s progress. Your input at this point is valuable in ensuring that our reporting practices meet both regulatory requirements and the needs of each school’s community.
Access to the survey can be found here: Parent/Carers Survey
Your responses will be confidential and used to inform the review of the TCE Reporting Guidelines document. Responses to the survey need to be completed by Friday 25 October.
Thank you in advance for your input in this matter.
Kind regards
Peter Stower
Director - Learning and Teaching
