A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Columba Families,
Next week is National Families Week. The enduring theme is ‘Stronger Families, Stronger Communities ‘. The aim of National Families Week 2022 is to celebrate the vital role that families play in community wellbeing. In reflecting upon this theme as a College family, each member of our community has an important contribution to make in providing a holistic education for the young people in our care. Like all families we have traditions, expectations, specific ways of working and particular ways we support each other when we are faced with challenges and new opportunities. The Columba family has a long history that is steeped in tradition; is built on respectful relationships and is united in Christ’s love. For more information please visit National Families Week. We are all an important piece of the Columba puzzle. This year we have noted the specific goals of our Annual School Improvement Plan within puzzle piece shapes; connecting us as one community. Please find here a link to this puzzle. Students across the college have created images, written stories, quotes, reflections on physical puzzle pieces that are displayed in locations across our school to remind us of our connectedness.
Last week students across Years 7-12 represented Columba in the Charters Towers Interschool Cross Country. Special thank you to Ms Cecilia Louk, Mr Andrew Butler and Mr Murray Griffin for their support in preparing our students for this event. Congratulations to Nikki Bethel, Will Fuller and Thomas Scholes who were awarded Age Champions and Jackson Walsh who was awarded Runner-up Age Champion on the day.
This year we have a record number of students who have been accepted into the 2022 Mulkadee Arts Festival which will be hosted in Townsville in the first week of Term 3. Students will be participating in a range of workshops including Voice, Drama, Dance, and Guitar. Some of our students have already attended workshops in Townsville in preparation for the event in July. Special thanks to Kalinda Large who is our school based representative for this festival. We thank her for advocacy and support of our students in the Arts. We look forward to hearing more of their experiences as they continue to prepare for the performance at the Entertainment Centre.
Last week we celebrated the important role that our mother’s, grandmothers and mother figures play in our lives as we celebrated Mother’s Day with liturgies and a range of activities. On Thursday students at St Mary’s engaged in activities with the special ladies in our lives. The students at Mt Carmel also hosted a special Mother’s Day prayer at Assembly this week. I hope each of our mum’s had a great Mother’s Day!
On Saturday evening we also hosted a Rice House Mass and Youth Group at the Parish. Special thanks to Mrs Christine O’Sullivan and Mr Ryan O’Connor for their support and to the students, staff and families for their attendance and engagement.
This week we began NAPLAN testing. Special thanks to Mrs Maria Peck, Mrs Joanne Andrews and our team of teachers and support staff for their assistance in facilitating the NAPLAN testing sessions. We will continue testing across next week as we endeavour to provide opportunities for catch-up test sessions for students who have been absent due to illness or other extenuating circumstances. Congratulations to all of our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students for their effort and attitude towards the tests this week. Special thank you to our teachers who have been engaging in targeted teaching across the year to build capacity in our learners. Teaching and learning is our daily core business and NAPLAN provides us with a snapshot of student progress to date.
Next week is National Boarding Week. During the upcoming week students and staff will engage in a range of activities to celebrate the important role of boarding at Columba. This is a great opportunity to showcase the opportunities, experiences and community that helps make Columba a great place to be. It is also a time to give thanks for the quality of care afforded to the students in our boarding school.
All the best for the fortnight ahead.
Many blessings,
Melissa Turner

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - ADMINISTRATION
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Term 2 is well underway and the students on the Mt Carmel Campus are busy engaging in the many academic, sporting, cultural and extra curricular opportunities on offer this term. This week Year 7 and 9 students are completing NAPLAN testing and Year 12 students completed their Essential English and Mathematics Common Internal Assessment Instruments.
ATTENDANCE: EVERY DAY COUNTS
Regular attendance at school is one of the essential building blocks of receiving a good education and achieving both academically and socially. If students miss school regularly this will impact on their results, ATAR, QCE and relationships with other students. Students will fall behind in their class work and assessments, and this may lead to fewer subject choices, impact on achievement in Years 11 and 12 and post school pathways. Students who miss school for one day a fortnight equals missing 1.5 years over 13 years of schooling. That is a substantial loss of important learning time. Regular attendance at school is encouraged by all students.
YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE
In Week 10 (20th – 24th June 2022) of this term our Year 10 students will participate in scheduled Work Experience as a part of their program of study (FSK20119 Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways). Students are required to attend voluntary placement in a workplace setting that aligns with career aspirations. Students will be required to have a workplace supervisor complete a third party report. Completing a formal work experience placement is considered a valuable experience when making decisions related to both subject and career pathways.
Mrs Grant is in the process of organising work experience for students. Parents of Year 10 students have been emailed an electronic form to complete in relation to where their son/daughter would like to complete work experience. It would be appreciated if these forms could be completed and returned to the College Office as soon as possible so that Mrs Grant can contact potential employers and arrange the placements.
2022 DALRYMPLE TRADE TRAINING CENTRE (DDTC) CHARTERS TOWERS CAREER EXPO
Year 10 and Year 12 students will be attending the Careers Expo which will be held at the Dalrymple Trade Training Centre this year. Year 10 students will attend the Careers Expo on Friday 27th May (11.30am – 12.45pm) and Year 11 and 12 students on Thursday 26st May (1:30-2:50pm). There will be a large range of exhibitors such as universities, employers, government agencies, private training colleges, TAFE, employment agencies, apprenticeship and traineeship providers in attendance at the Careers Expo. This event presents a great opportunity for students to explore future career paths.
WEEK 5 TERM 2 YEAR 11 AND 12 ASSESSMENT WEEK
During Week 5 (16th-20th May), Year 11 and 12 will complete many assessment items, as indicated on the Assessment Calendar in Compass. Students are expected to attend school during this week to complete examinations and submit assessment items, on or before the due date. During this time students will be attending normal lessons unless they are required for an examination.
It is crucial that students set aside blocks of time to study and complete assessments each day and establish a routine. At peak assessment times it is expected that students will need to dedicate additional time to study.
Year 11 students complete Unit 1 and Year 12 students Unit 3 on Friday 20th May. Year 11 students commence Unit 2 and Year 12 students Unit 4 on Monday 23rd May.
YEAR 11 SUBJECT CHANGES
If Year 11 students wish to investigate the possibility of changing a subject they need to email Mrs Peck and make an appointment to investigate the possibility. Subject changes during Year 11 and 12 are not recommended as they may disadvantage students as they may not have the foundation skills needed to achieve on Year 12 assessment. Subject changes may also impact on a student’s ability to achieve a QCE. Year 11 subject changes must be finalised by Friday 3rd June.
Year 12 students are unable to change subjects at this stage as Units 3 and 4 must be studied as a pair.
ASSESSMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURES
A copy of the Columba Catholic College Assessment Policy and Procedures is available on the College website. This document should be referred to by all Year 7-12 students and parents. The document includes details about:
- Submission of assessment.
- Access arrangements and reasonable adjustments (AARA)
- Drafting, scaffolding and response length.
- Academic integrity.
YEARS 7-12 ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS AND REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS (AARA), INCLUDING ILLNESS AND MISADVENTURE
Columba Catholic College recognises that some students have disability, impairment and/or medical conditions, or experience other circumstances that may be a barrier to their performance in assessment. Access arrangements and reasonable adjustments (AARA) are designed to assist these students.
AARA are provided to minimise barriers for eligible students so that they can demonstrate their learning, knowledge and skill in assessment. These barriers could be permanent, temporary or intermittent. Students may also be eligible for AARA where illness and misadventure (i.e. unforeseen circumstances) or other situations may prevent students from demonstrating their learning, knowledge and skill.
Students are not eligible for AARA on the following grounds:
- unfamiliarity with the English language
- teacher absence or other teacher-related difficulties
- matters that the student could have avoided (e.g. misreading an examination timetable, misreading instructions in examinations)
- matters of the student’s or parent’s/carer’s own choosing (e.g. family holidays).
Application forms for AARA can be obtained from the College Office.
YEAR 7-12 APPLICATION FOR EXTENSIONS / CHANGE OF DATE OF AN ASSESSMENT ITEM
Year 7-12 drafts and assessment items are due on or before the due date. If a student knows they will be absent on the day that an assessment item is due, then they must organise themselves to submit it on or before the due date. Extensions or sitting an exam on an alternative date will not be granted for planned absences such as family holidays, attending rodeos, social events, leaving early at the end of term etc. If a student is absent on the day that an assessment item is due, it must be emailed to the teacher of the subject by 3.00pm.
YEAR 7-10 STUDENTS who need to apply for an extension or change of date for an assessment item due to illness, misadventure or unforeseen circumstances must collect a green ‘Application for Extension / Change of Date of an Assessment Item’ form from the office. This form needs to be completed and signed by the students and parents / caregivers. The form must be submitted to the class teacher for consideration. Documentary evidence such as a doctor’s certificate or detailed letter must be attached to the application detailing why the student is applying for an extension or change of date. Where possible this application should be submitted prior to the due date of the assessment item. The classroom teacher will inform the student if their application has been successful.
YEAR 10 RELIGION & ETHICS STUDENTS AND YEAR 11 AND 12 STUDENTS who need to apply for an extension or change of date for an assessment item due to illness, misadventure or unforeseen circumstances need to collect a pink ‘Access Arrangements & Reasonable Adjustments’ (AARA) form from the office. This form needs to be completed, signed by your parents / caregivers and submitted to your class teacher for consideration. A Confidential Medical Report / detailed Medical Certificate or other suitable documentation must be attached to the application. Where possible this application should be submitted prior to the due date of the assessment item or on the day that you return to school. The classroom teacher will inform the student if their application has been successful.
Year 10, 11 and 12 students, please note that the QCAA has stipulated that the medical certificate cannot just state ‘medical condition’. The medical report or certificate must contain the following information:
- diagnosis of disability/medical condition
- date of diagnosis
- date of occurrence or onset of the disability/medical condition
- symptoms, treatment or course of action related to the disability/medical condition
- information about how the diagnosed disability, impairment or medical condition affects the student participating in assessment, particularly timed assessment when considering external assessment
- professional recommendations regarding AARA
YEAR 12 STUDENTS
All Year 12 have a Learning Account that provides information on their subject enrolments and Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credits. Students need their LUI number to access their personalised account. Each student’s Learning Account can be accessed via the myQCE website. It is each student’s responsibility to notify the College if any personal details have changed or their subject information is incorrect.
To receive a QCE, students must achieve the set amount of learning, in the set standard, in a set pattern, while meeting literacy and numeracy requirements.
Students are at risk of not receiving a QCE if:
- Their QCE is projected to be less that 20 credits.
- They do not pass all subjects they are enrolled in in Unit 3 and 4. Units 3 and 4 are studied as a pair and students must achieve a C for all summative assessment completed to achieve 2 credit points for each subject.
- Please note ATAR eligible students must pass an English subject in Unit 3 & 4 to obtain an ATAR
- They do not successfully complete all competencies in a certificate course they are enrolled in.
Students are able to access the following support structures to assist them with their studies:
- Assessment Support on Wednesday afternoon, 3:05-4:05pm in M4
- Homework Club on Thursday afternoon, 3:05-4:05pm in the Library
- Maths sessions at lunch time – Mr Griffin
- Study classes. If a student is undertaking an external course, they have study spares incorporated into their timetable each week to catch up on work missed while attending training and/or completing course workbooks, online classes or SDE recorded lessons.
Students who do not meet the QCE requirements at the end of Year 12 can continue to work towards their certificate after finishing Year 12 through the completion of additional learning such as vocational education and training courses or traineeships. Once eligible, students will be issued a QCE in the following July or December.
If you wish to discuss your child’s progress in regards to their QCE eligibility or future pathway options, please contact the College to arrange a meeting with one of the following staff:
Maria Peck, Deputy Principal Administration
Christine O’Sullivan, Senior School Program Leader

SECONDARY INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Interschool Cross Country
On Friday 6 May, Columba’s Cross Country team met at the Airport to represent their College at the Interschool Cross Country. Our team was a bit light on numbers due to illness and injuries, but we had a number of reserves step up and run for their age group, some of these runners were not even noted as reserves on the original list, great effort team. We thank the team members who did their best for Columba and congratulate our age champions and runner-up.
Age Champions:
- 12 years girls – Nikki Bethel
- 14 years boys – Will Fuller
- 15 years boys – Thomas Scholes
Runner up Age Champion:
- 14 years boys – Jackson Walsh
Our best age group for the boys were the 14 year olds, they tied for first place in their division on points. The best age group for the girls were the 13 year olds, they were only 2 points behind the winners on points. Our captains of our Cross Country team ran well, their results were: Maria Wilson (4th place) and Bryce Kingham (10th place), good effort captains, leading from the front.
Congratulations to our students who have made the Charters Towers team to trial for the NQ Cross Country Team in Townsville on Tuesday 31 May:
Nikki Bethel, Sally Sproat, Anastacia Johnson, Will Fuller, Jackson Walsh, Marcus Winterburn, Erin Day, Thomas Scholes, Maria Wilson, Reagan Butler, Jed Fuller.

FROM THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT ON THE MT. CARMEL CAMPUS
Semester One has commenced with realia learning with excursions for Years 7, 9 and 10.
During the last week of last term, the Year 9 cohort had the opportunity to visit the Jezzine Army Barracks in Townsville for the preparation of this term's World War I unit. The tour guides were wonderful and they were volunteers to help the students to understand deeper about the happenings of World War I. The cohort looked at primary sources and artifacts of the war, there was a simulation of what it was like in the trenches, we also gained new knowledge that can help us with our WWI unit for this term.
Below is a brief report of the excursion from one of our Year 9 student:
“Last term on Wednesday 30th of March, the year 9 cohort travelled up to Townsville to visit the Jezzine Barracks Military Museum to learn about this term's history unit; World War I. The Jezzine Barracks were all about World War I and World War II, it included few of the original pieces from the war. Before Jezzine Barracks became a museum, it was a home to Australian military units for 120 years.
As we went through the exhibits, we learnt many interesting events and actions from World War I and World War II. Some examples of what we learnt are what the trenches and tunnels looked like, how they were made and mined, how many horses/animals, men and women died, they had a two person gun and a six person gun, they also had a female bird in the tunnels to alert the miners when they had to get out. What the students found was that many of them found their family’s surnames up on the honour and roll board of WWI and WWII.
The value it added to our current History unit because we were able to extend our knowledge before we started learning about World War I. We also found out why Fort Kissing Point was called Kissing Point, not because couples go there, but because it was where a boat met the land.
But with the excursion, it did really help the cohort understand what took place in World War I and the sacrifices all the men, women and animals made to give us the freedom we have today.”
Grace Kuhl, Year 9.
This term as the Year 7 and 8 students transition on from History in their HASS learning, the next unit is the Civics and Citizenship component of the course. This week, we commenced the unit “Our political and legal system” and “Democracy and law in action” respectively. It is vital for our young men and women to have an understanding of how we as citizens of Australia can collaborate together to shape our nation into a fair and just society for all, where students can establish their own sense of what it truly means to be Australian citizens.
Highlight for this term was the Year 10s attended the excursion in our own backyard at Towers Hill with a local guide. The students were fascinated that Charters Towers played a role during World War 2, where students experienced the simulation of bunkers. This is the first time this tour has been operated for schools in Charters Towers. I sincerely thank Ms Simmons for liaising with our Regional Council for arranging this great opportunity for our students.
We look forward to reporting on the various exciting events that are happening in our Humanities Department throughout this year. So please stay tuned!

SCIENCE NEWS ON THE MT. CARMEL CAMPUS
Science at Columba is in full swing this term! Students in Year 7 are currently learning about the Sun, Moon and Earth. As well as studying facts about these objects, students investigate why the European model of a 4-season calendar may not be appropriate to our tropical location, compared with Aboriginal seasonal calendars. I’m new to Charters Towers, but I’m confident I won’t see snow here in winter!
Year 8 students are investigating the smallest unit of life – the cell. They have been looking down microscopes and observing a variety of cells, including plant, animal and bacterial cells. What’s the largest cell on Earth? Ask a Year 8 student!
Year 9 will really shake things up when they create an earthquake-proof building! The topic of Tectonic Plates looks at how and where volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis occur.
Year 10 has been mixing it up in the Chemistry topic. They have been looking at how particular variables affect reaction rates of chemicals. At the end of this topic, they should be able to explain whether a headache is better treated with a whole paracetamol tablet… or a crushed up one.
Our Senior students are working hard towards a range of Assessment Tasks. Your piece of advice from me: do small chunks, often; a little bit every day is better than a lot the night before! Remember, your teachers are here to assist you, so please reach out to them.
Well done to the Year 11 and Year 12 Physics students. I heard very positive reports about your excursion to Townsville.
To my Year 12 Biology students – thank you for a fantastic excursion to Fletcher Creek in Week 1. We managed to combine the field work with a ton of fun! As it should be – Science is really fun! (And if it’s not – you’re not doing it right!).
Weird fact of the Week: A ‘blue moon’ isn’t actually blue, but a ‘blood moon’ is red!
A blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. A blood moon occurs during a lunar eclipse. There are no blue moons in 2022, but we will see a blood moon on the 8th November.

YEAR ONE NEWS
We have hit the ground running this term with ANZAC Day, Country Music, Mother’s Day celebrations and plenty of learning in between. We have also welcomed Chantilly to our class. It’s been a busy but productive start.
This term we introduced Year 1 News to further our oral language development. This has tied in well with our Science unit, as we learnt many new facts about minibeasts through our talks. In HASS we are comparing what life was like in the past to how it is now. Our excursion to Zara Clark Museum brought this to life for us as we saw how communication, transport and school life was like in the past.
During English lessons we are learning to write factual reports, and how to distinguish fact from opinion. Daily oral reading and writing routines have seen us making great progress already this year. In Maths, we’ve introduced many number strategies that will help us for many years to come. Counting on, counting back, Rainbow facts, doubles and near doubles allow us to add and subtract numbers with accuracy.
I am very proud of our Year 1 class who have developed a love of learning, they seem to know that learning really is their super power.

RESIDENTIAL NEWS
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff and Students,
The much-needed rain that North and Western Queensland has received over the last couple of weeks has been a God-send. It will allow many primary producers to breathe a little easier, at least for the immediate future. In saying this though, some areas still require follow-up rain to keep the pastures and crops growing.
Last Wednesday I had the good fortune of watching our First Rugby League team compete against BTC, with the boys coming away with a strong win, 42-6. Preston Ah-Wing was strong with some damaging runs up the middle, while Latrell Heard made some incisive runs as well. As Always, Assariah Lenoy gave 100 percent, leaving nothing out on the field. On the same day, it was great to see our Girls’ First netball team win both of their games against BTC and ASSG in the local school compeition. Clarice MacNamara and Constance (CC) Holden played like troopers.
Last Friday, Columba competed at the Interschool Cross-Country. It was great to see many of our boarders compete and be successful. Congratulations to Tom Scholes and Nikki Bethel who won age champions for their respective age groups.
At the College’s annual Country Music Concert, again many of our boarders participated. It was great to see the likes of Shaun Gould and Maria Wilson showcase their talents for all to see. It is events such as these that really enhance our sense of community.
As we are now in the grips of the much-dreaded flu season, it is imperative that everyone do their best from becoming ill. Some recommended strategies/precautions include;
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth so as to minimise the possibility of being contaminated with infectious organisms such as viruses and harmful bacteria.
- Stay home when sick. This will assist in limiting the spreading of flu.
- Wash your hands. This action will help protect you and others from germs.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. This can help in preventing others from getting sick. Coughing into the crook of your elbow is also a recommended action when coughing or sneezing.
- Practice other good healthy habits such as getting plenty of uninterrupted sleep, engaging in moderate physical exercise, drinking plenty of water, and eating a good balance of nutritious food.
